Show #104 – April 5, 2009

As part of an ongoing effort to promote not only Sesame Street the TV show, but also Sesame Workshop and its many special projects, I’m delighted to welcome Sonia Manzano (official website) on to The MuppetCast this week. Ms Manzano has been playing the part of Maria on Sesame Street for 37 years now, and in this special interview we talk about her life both on and off the Street.

Sonia is also a highly sought-after guest speaker, so be sure and catch her in these upcoming appearances:
Sept 25, 2009: San Antonio, TX
Oct 14, 2009: San Jose, CA – YWCA Keynote address

Next week is The MuppetCast’s 2nd Anniversary Show! I’m still in disbelief, but thanks to your support we’re still alive and kicking! So to celebrate, I’m featuring a very special interview with longtime Muppeteer Jerry Nelson. You read that correctly. Mr Nelson was very generous with his time and commentary to The MuppetCast, and the result is a near one-hour interview that will be hear in its entirety next week, along with your emails and voicemails! Anything special that you’d like to call in or send to me for the 2nd anniversary should be done by Saturday, April 11. Thanks again everyone!

Are you on Twitter? If so, feel free to add The MuppetCast to your list of followees (and I’ll gladly follow your tweets too). Also make sure to follow The Muppet News Flash, The Muppet Wiki, Sesame Workshop, and The Jim Henson Company. Post your twitter address in the comments for this or any future episode and we’ll be sure and follow you too!

Did you know there are 3 separate Sesame Street Live productions touring the US and Canada? It’s true! Check out the new MuppetCast SSL Schedule page for show descriptions as well as show dates to find out when they’re coming to your town.

The MuppetCast is sponsored by our friends at Bell, Book & Comic. Life should be more fun!

If you saw the recent PBS special “Coming Home: Military Families Cope With Change” this past Wednesday April 1, one of the families you met were the Marcolongos of Del Mar, CA. Maj. Nico Marcolongo returned from two tours in Iraq in 2007 with PTSD, and through time and effort he and his family are now doing well in dealing with this invisible injury. The Del Mar Times reported on a PTSD support group Nico founded, and how it’s grown to include larger groups of servicepeople.

The Muppet News Flash has a video clip of Elmo’s recent appearance on NBC’s TODAY, promoting the upcoming DVD “Being Green”. Look for it starting Tuesday, April 7. They also point to a YouTube clip showing some behind-the-scenes footage from the filming for Coming Home, including some comments from Sesame Workshop CEO Gary Knell.

Sesame Workshop and Genius Products have teamed up with Amazon.com to enable we the fans to vote on our favorite classic Sesame Street clips for inclusion on an upcoming 40th anniversary DVD collection. Vote for your favorites here!

A few folks evidently put their heads together recently and filmed a mock trailer for the fictional video game “Jim Henson’s Resident Evil 5“. Whether you like the content or not (PG-13 for violence), if you watch it you’ll have to admire their workmanship. They put a lot of time into it, and I would really like to hear from at least one of the participants!

New on ToughPigs.com this week: a shiny new article from Ryan Roe taking us through some of his favorite freak-out moments from our fleecy flippered friend Kermit. Lots of great clips and commentary from ToughPigs.com! (That’s two angels, right Joe?)

Questions/Comments about the Muppets or The MuppetCast can be emailed to me@muppetcast.com, or called in to the voicemail line at 614-364-4270 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              614-364-4270      end_of_the_skype_highlighting. Even better, stop by the Muppet Central Forums and discuss this and many other episodes with Muppet fans worldwide. Follow the show on Twitter and join the Facebook page too!

Have a great week!

-Steve

I met my first muppet in Sept. 1969 and have been working with them most of the rest of my life (40) years.

I Remeber the first time I saw sesame street. I was three years old[which wasn’t long ago because i’m thirteen] and my mom turns on the t.v and I see this little red fur ball tap dancing down the stairs. My mom said that I was gigling and clapping and every time I wanted to see sesame street i would just say ”Mommy! Mommy! I wanna see red!I Wanna see Red![not red fraggle]. That for me is one of the most classic sesame street bits ever. I was happy that this was one of the choices to vote for on Amazon.com for a classic scene for the Sesame Street 40 Dvd
