There are lots of Muppet happenings at Walt Disney World in Florida. Yesterday, the Muppets premiered a new live show at the Magic Kingdom. The Muppets Present…Great Moments in American History stars Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, a couple of chickens, and Sam the Eagle (of course). The characters appear in windows above the Hall of Presidents and Heritage House in Liberty Square. They are joined by human host James “J.J.” Jefferson who is the town crier.
The Muppets appear courtesy of some talented Disney puppeteers performing to recorded tracks. The productions are performed several times daily. Currently, two shows are in rotation. The first salutes the Declaration of Independence, and the second relates the tale of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. The shows capture the Muppet spirit with original music and humor. Each show runs around 10 minutes. A link to videos of the shows can be found at the end of the article.
There is also Muppet news at Epcot. While there had been no advance announcement, the Muppet Mobile Lab returned to the park today. This exhibit was originally developed for Disney’s California Adventure as part of the “Living Characters Initiative” project. Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker interact with park guests through the use of advanced audio-animatronic remote-control-puppeteering technology. The Muppet Mobile Lab was last seen in Epcot in 2007.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios, already the home of Muppet*Vision 3D since 1991, recently announced the addition of a Rizzo themed pizza restaurant. PizzeRizzo will open this fall amid some additional Muppet theming in the courtyard. Animal Kingdom is now the only park at Walt Disney World without a Muppet presence. Surely with all the frogs and dogs and bears and chickens and whatevers, it’s only a short time.
