The Henson family recently donated over 600 items to The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY. The collection of 540 toys and products as well as 60 books will be part of the Muppets, Fraggles, and Beyond: The Jim Henson Collection exhibit opening on April 8, 2016.
The toys were previously stored at The Jim Henson Legacy warehouse in New York City, which is not open to the public. The items cover much of Henson’s career and include merchandise related to Sesame Street, Dinosaurs, Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and The Muppet Show. Aside from his career in film and television, Henson also impacted the world of play and playthings significantly and his contributions earned him a place in the Toy Industry Association’s Toy Industry Hall of Fame—housed at The Strong.
Muppets, Fraggles, and Beyond: The Jim Henson Collection features dozens of licensed toys and products including coloring books, activity books, board games, card games, video games, stuffed animals, puppets, jigsaw puzzles, music boxes, collecting cards, hats, calendars, and household decorations. Only 75 to 100 of the toys will be on display in three cases on the first floor of the museum, although all of the items will be shown on the online catalog of 65,000 toys. The exhibit will run through July 5.
The Strong is located at One Manhattan Square, Rochester, NY 14607.
