I didn’t realize this until I posted the show, but we actually begin this episode with Thanksgiving and end with Christmas! Seems like a good idea, given that we’re kicking off the 2009 holiday season this week. Longtime listener BJ Wanlund is my guest, and in a new Muppet List segment we discuss a Muppet project near and dear to our hearts, Muppet Babies. (more…)

To cap our three-part Sesame Street 40th anniversary celebration, I happily bring you a new interview with longtime human cast member Emilio Delgado – better known to many as Luis. Emilio has been a part of the Sesame cast since 1971, which I believe makes Luis the longest continuous role for a Latino actor! We talk about the show’s past, present, and future, Emilio’s personal contributions to children’s cultural education on the Street, and much, much more. (more…)

Sesame Street 40th Anniversary Tribute

Posted by Steve Swanson | Feature Pages | Saturday 21 November 2009 1:34 am

On November 10, 1969, something different happened on TV. An experiment began over the airwaves. One that had been researched and talked about for years before the first scene was even taped. Sesame Street sought to answer the question “can today’s children actually learn something from watching television?”. 40 years later we all know the answer is a resounding “YES!”, because almost all of us are graduates of the Street and can attest to the funny, quirky, catchy, and unforgettable moments Sesame Street has given us over the years.

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, The MuppetCast presents a special 3-episode tribute to the show, and everyone and everything associated with it.

Part 1 (Episode #135): A look back at the first 10 historic seasons of Sesame Street, featuring multiple audio pieces of special songs and moments. Many “firsts” can be found in this 2-hour audio production.

Part 2 (Episode #136): You might call this “A Story of Sesame Street”. In a 90-minute podcast it’s impossible to tell the entire story of this incredible show, but we focus in on a few choice moments and celebrate them.

Part 3 (Episode #137): A look back with one of the longtime Sesame Street cast members, Emilio Delgado. Mr. Delgado plays the character Luis on the show, and has done so since 1971.

Dark Crystal fans will be very happy with this week’s show, although it’s admittedly a little shorter than the last two weeks. I had to make a quick trip out of town and unfortunately that left little time to put the normal show together. But I hope you’ll enjoy a rare recording from 1982: The Dark Crystal Read-Along Book! This is from a great series of book-and-record pairings that came out in the 1980s, and while you can’t see the pictures, you’ll enjoy the complete record. (more…)
